During a recent VIP bus tour featuring 10 of the projects featured in the Tour of Remodeled Homes, Remodeling Contractors won an award the utilization of the most member Trade partners and Suppliers in the tour. The B.E.A.M Award or Best Engagement of Associate Members Award was base on the 19 member companies involved during the remodel of House #11 of the Tour of Remodeled Homes. The whole home remodel in West Des Moines, Iowa was inspired by homeowners Joe and Katie who like to entertain in the new space.

The dsm Home Design Awards are an annual feature of dsm magazine, which has long covered Greater Des Moines’ most luxurious, creative and intriguing homes and gardens. 9 judges were selected to choose their favorite projects from traditional restorations to modern kitchen layouts.

Remodeling Contractors took top honors in two areas within the detail category that they were judged. The project submitted was a large scale remodel involving the complete demolition of the interior of a nearly 100 year old home. Within that project the team also built a two story addition on the home that housed the new kitchen for the home. Based on the judging, this project stood out in both its use of lighting and its unique installation of hardwood flooring.

The flooring which was inlaid with intricate patterns of oak and wenge used a different pattern in each of the homes many rooms. It adds a feeling of warmth and continuity throughout the home, while creating interest within the patterns created.

The lighting was designed around two aesthetics, first is the  recessed lighting, which is cleverly hidden throughout the home in the ceilings and cabinets. These are paired with the more traditional chandeliers and sconces creating a warmth that you would find in an old home. Both of these are tied together through a computer controller that allows both the new and the old to work in tandem without the need to manually set dimmers and switches.

By a vote from other Remodelers and VIPs on the Tour of Remodeled Homes, Remodeling Contractors won awards for Most Dramatic Change, Best Reuse of Materials and The B.E.A.M Award. The members of the Remodelers Council picked their favorites after a special tour of the homes to be presented during the annual Tour of Remodeled Homes. Remodeling Contractors were honored with 3 out of the 5 disciplines judged.

The home located at 2835 High Street in Des Moines, is owned by Scott Spetman a Remodeling Specialist with Remodeling Contractors. The hoarder’s home built in 1912 was completely gutted including the framing in the interior and the floor systems so the staircases could be moved.  They then painstakingly installed a period correct interior into the building using quarter-sawn and riftsawn oak as well as many other hard to find materials. This was all after digging the foundation out to 7′ ceiling heights and new electrical, plumbing and mechanicals. Finally, a garage was moved by crane to a new location and the team built a two story addition with a large cooks kitchen, all in keeping the period correct motif. No detail was spared including the inlayed floors and texture of the plaster walls in its reproduction.

When asked about the awards for his home, Spetman responded, “I am really happy that everyone appreciates what we did here. I built it the way I wanted it, with little compromise and I am glad everyone could see my vision for this project!”

Each award is based on a different set of criteria created by the Remodelers Council and given to each participant in the Tour of Remodeled Homes that displays the best adaptation to that criteria for that year. With the shear volume of work performed along with it’s level of difficulty the award for Most Dramatic Change was a natural fit. Along with the reuse of the original garage, the High Street project also was able to reuse two interior doors to build a one of a kind pocket door and recycle a collection of antique books for the library. Lastly, the B.E.A.M Award or Best Engagement of Associate Members Award goes to the firm that uses the most Trade Partners and Suppliers that are part of the Remodelers Council during the remodel. This project had an outstanding 31 member partners who helped with the job.

Remodeling Contractors was chosen for this honor, by a panel of judges from the fields of art, architecture, editorial, education and design in a blind judging process. Local builders, remodelers, designers and architects submitted 140 entries to compete in 21 categories. In total 153 rooms, homes and outdoor spaces were reviewed with the winners announced on Tuesday. Remodeling Contractors was the winner with an entry in the Primary Suite category for a Master bedroom and bathroom they completed last spring.

“It was a total team effort.” claimed Zak Fleming, one of the owners of Remodeling Contractors, ” Donna and Scott designed the space with the help of the homeowners, and the production team made the dream come true with Jason Hoffman leading the project.”

Zak Fleming couldn’t even imagine what his company would become when he started to lay the groundwork for Fleming Construction in early January of 2001. “I was really just looking for an opportunity to try something different” explained Fleming, “I liked being an electrician but wanted to keep learning.” To hear him tell the 20 year history of what is now Remodeling Contractors, he hasn’t stopped looking for those opportunities or stopped learning.

Rollie Clarkson had a similar experience when he founded the company that would become Remodeling Contractors in the spring of 1985. “I had worked summers with my family throughout High School and College.” added Clarkson,  “I was really more of a Jack of all trades, master of none.” After 35 years in business, Rollie seems to have mastered the art of remodeling, which is no small feat.

Clarkson and Fleming’s futures seemed intertwined when they met at a Remodelers Council event a little over 10 years ago.  “I was just starting to see some success but was struggling in growing my business.” said Zak, “When I met Rollie, he was so warm and open to sharing his knowledge.” That chance meeting became a mentorship, and in 2020 evolved into a merger between Fleming Construction and Remodeling Contractors. The two, along with Fleming’s business partner Marc Black, now manage one of Central Iowa’s top Design – Build Remodeling firms. “It’s hard to believe this all started with a bucket of tools and a ’95 Dodge Dakota pickup truck.” added Fleming, “I am really proud of our team and what we have become.”

With a new year comes a new location and with a new location comes a new collaboration between two home improvement experts that is sure to turn a few heads. Located at 3051 104th st in Urbandale this shared space is has over 3,000 square feet which houses the design staff of both Remodeling Contractors and JY Design along with a design studio centered around the customer experience.

JY Design is owned by Julie Youngblade who founded the company in 2009. “I am excited that we have more space than our previous location,” said Youngblade, “it is light and bright and we are anxious to fill it up with great new products.” The new location also comes with warehouse space and is connected to Remodeling Contractors office and workshop in Urbandale giving the two companies plenty of room to grow. “We call this area of Urbandale “Remodeler’s Row” because of its proximity to our suppliers and trade partners.” explained Zak Fleming, one of the owners of Remodeling Contractors, “We have been here for 5 Years now and find it saves our customers time when searching for the right products.”

Along with a great location the new space has been updated with amenities to cater to the complexities of designing spaces for clients. ” We now have a conference room with a large monitor, stepping up our ability to show clients our vision for their home!” stated Julie.  Marc Black, Fleming’s business partner agreed adding, “The 3D Rendering software that we use makes it easy for customers to make sure they are getting just what they are expecting.” Along with technology, the new showroom boasts multiple vignettes showcasing everything from living room furniture to custom bathrooms, with a custom kitchen coming in February.

“Many businesses are forming strategic alliances to reduce overhead and cross promote,” stated Zak, “this is a smart move for us and we are happy to have JY on the team.” This is Black and Fleming’s 7th strategic partnership to date with the acquisition of Remodeling Contractors earlier this year. “We are so excited about our move to partner with Remodeling Contractors!” added Julie,  “Although we still operate as an independent business, the co-mingling of our showroom with RC’s renovation displays really makes for a winning combination. Shelby and I are thrilled to be in the new location and working side by side with the RC team. ”
