This historic Des Moines home, built in 1912, underwent a 10-year, multi-phase renovation that transformed a hoarder’s house into a beautiful blend of modern convenience and historical craftsmanship. Every phase of the project was thoughtfully executed to honor the home’s original architecture while updating it for modern living.
Gutting and Structural Overhaul
The renovation began with a complete gutting of the home’s interior, including removing the framing and floor systems to relocate staircases. Craftsmen installed a period-correct interior using rare materials like quarter-sawn and rift-sawn oak. The foundation was also dug out to create 7-foot ceiling heights, while new electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems were installed to modern standards.
Meticulous Restoration and Design
Over the next decade, every detail of the home was carefully considered. The library was designed using books salvaged before demolition, while plaster textures were meticulously replicated throughout the living spaces. Coffered ceilings, inlaid floors, wainscoting, plate rails, and custom-built cabinetry surround the home, offering something new to discover at every turn.
Two-Story Addition and Modern Amenities
In the latest phase, the garage was moved by crane to make space for a two-story addition, featuring a large, modern kitchen and a powder room. The kitchen is equipped with top-tier, state-of-the-art appliances like induction cooktops, a dedicated wok burner, and a four-foot prep sink. Designed for culinary creativity, the kitchen includes at least two of everything—ensuring ample space for both cooking and entertaining.
Craftsmanship and Modern Conveniences
This historic renovation perfectly blends the charm of early 20th-century architecture with modern technology and conveniences. With coffered ceilings, intricate woodwork, and modern kitchen amenities, this home offers the best of both worlds—historical beauty and modern functionality.
With at least two of everything, from ovens to dishwashers, it’s built for both culinary adventures and pouring the perfect cocktail. This home was a part of the 2021 Tour of Remodeled Homes and earned three awards for design and craftsmanship. To learn more about these awards, Click Here!
