This ranch-style home remodel in the western suburbs of Des Moines, Iowa blends comfort, function, and timeless design. The homeowners loved their home, but the layout no longer fit how they lived and entertained. So, we reimagined the space with a custom addition and a more open floor plan.
The result is a transitional ranch remodel with modern farmhouse warmth and clean industrial accents. Now, the home feels open, bright, and ready for everyday living or large gatherings.
A Custom Kitchen Addition That Transformed the Home
The biggest goal was clear from the start: create a large open-concept kitchen made for hosting. To make that possible, we added square footage and redesigned the main living area around a spacious new kitchen.
Today, the kitchen connects seamlessly to the dining and living spaces. As a result, the entire home feels more social, functional, and inviting.
Key kitchen features include:
- White shaker cabinets with matte black hardware for a clean, timeless look.
- Dark quartz countertops that add contrast, durability, and easy maintenance.
- White subway tile backsplash that keeps the design classic and bright.
- Large island with a warm wood base and seating for several guests.
- Industrial-style pendant lights that bring character and focus to the island.
- Premium stainless steel appliances including a built-in refrigerator, wall oven, and sleek range hood.
- 60-inch refrigerator and freezer storage for easy entertaining and everyday convenience.

Open-Concept Living with Warm, Cohesive Style
This remodel was about more than a kitchen. It was about improving how every space works together. Therefore, we created an open-concept layout that connects the kitchen, dining, and living areas in a natural way.
Throughout the home, wood-look tile flooring creates a consistent foundation. In addition, details like wainscoting, large windows, and layered textures give the home a warm and polished feel.
The finished style blends:
- Ranch home simplicity
- Transitional balance
- Modern farmhouse warmth
- Industrial lighting and accents
Together, these elements create a home that feels current without losing its timeless appeal.
A Mudroom Designed for Real Life
The homeowners also wanted better daily function. So, we expanded the mudroom to improve storage, organization, and flow.
This new mudroom creates a practical transition between the outdoors and the main living space. As a result, it helps the home stay cleaner and more organized, even during busy weeks.
A Hidden Guitar Room with Personal Character
One of the most memorable features in this remodel is the hidden guitar room. This custom space adds personality and purpose to the home. It also gives the homeowners a private place to play music without interrupting the rest of the household.
Thoughtful details like this are what turn a renovation into a truly personal remodel.
A Ranch Remodel That Supports Everyday Living
Every design choice in this Des Moines area remodel supports the homeowners’ lifestyle. The kitchen is built for gathering. The mudroom improves daily routines. The hidden guitar room adds a one-of-a-kind feature. Even the laundry room adds convenience with built-in storage and an efficient layout.
Because of these updates, the home now feels larger, more functional, and better suited for both quiet nights and special occasions.
